Beneath you will find the most frequently asked questions about the Swim in Maastricht.

When will the Swim in Maastricht take place?

8th of September 2019

At what time will the Swim begin?

The walk-in will start from 10AM until 4PM. There is a possibility to reserve a shared breakfast. Watch the website for the actual schedule.

What is the location and course of the Swim?

In the Meuse river at MWC in Maastricht. The starting point for both the 1 km and 2 km swims is at StayOK, close to the Kennedy Bridge from where the swimmers will swim upstream to the buoy. The swimmers of the 2 km swim will pass MWC and swim a longer course. After that, back downstream in the direction of MWC.

What is the starting and finishing point?

The starting point is at StayOK close to the Kennedy Bridge. The finishing point will be at Maastrichtse Watersport Club (MWC).

What is the length of the course?

The distances will be 1 or 2 kilometers. This is your own choice or that of your team.

Is there a separate swim for kids?

No, not during our first edition of 2019. This will be taken into consideration afterwards for 2020.

Where will be proceeds in 2019 go to?

In 2019 there are two mentioned research projects where the proceeds can be donated to. The first one is an extensive research for a medicine against colon cancer and the second one is research for a new radiation method for cancer patients. MUMC+ is involved in both researches. Take a look at the website for the extensive research programs.

Is there room for public or spectators?

Of course, everyone is invited to support you. It will be a festive afternoon for both swimmers and public. Next to supporting and moral support, there will be a program for a cozy family day.

Can I walk by as a supporter next to the course?

This is possible if the course is eligible for this. We thrive to make it easy to follow the course from the side.

What activities will there be on Sunday September 8th?

The exact schedule is not finalized yet, but it will be announced well before the event. Check the website at a regular basis.

Can I sail with my own boat?

In order to maximize the security of our swimmers and to make sufficient room for rescue workers and police, this is not allowed.

Who can participate to Swim to Fight Cancer?

Each participant should be at least 16 years old, should not have health issues and must not be pregnant. A participant should have at least an A or B level swimming certificate, which has to be proven before the start. Note that participants younger than 18 years old can only participate under responsibility of their parents or guardians and need written approval. A ‘consent form’ should be used for this. This form can be downloaded from the website www.swimtofightcancer.nl/maastricht or is available on email request at our secretariat: info@maastricht.swimtofightcancer.nl.

Is it allowed for companies behind business teams to launch activities to raise donations?

Yes, of course. We embrace all initiatives to raise donations for our charity. However, we would like to know beforehand which activities will be organized. This allows us to anticipate and we can keep track. Swim to Fight Cancer is not responsible in any case for organized activities by third parties.

How many participants are expected at Swim to Fight Cancer Maastricht 2019.

We thrive to host 700 participants at a maximum. The board of Swim to Fight Cancer preserves the right to change this number.

Do I need a wet suit to swim in the Meuse?

A wet suit is allowed, but not required. In case the water temperature is 18 degrees Celsius or less a wet suit is required, but at the beginning of September the water temperature will most likely be higher. However, a wet suit improves buoyancy, which will make swimming easier.

Is it allowed to swim with flippers?

No, the use of flippers is not allowed.

 Do I need to swim against the flow?

Yes, but the water flow will not be very strong during the summer period. In case the water level (and as a consequence the flow) will be to high according to Rijkswaterstaat (which is not to be expected in September), this will be communicated in time. The event could be cancelled, but this is very rare and not to be expected.

Can I borrow/rent/buy a wet suit?

The Swim to Fight Cancer will be in Maastricht on Sunday 8 September. Lopers Company Maastricht supports this event and offers participants the opportunity to rent wetsuits.
Participants must send an email to maastricht@loperscompany.nl before stating a wetsuit, stating name, gender, height and weight.
Please note: the most important submission date is 31 August a.s.

The rental costs are € 40.00, of which we donate € 10.00 to Swim to Fight Cancer! The deposit is € 100.00. The deposit must be paid when picking up a wetsuit.

NB all wetsuits can be picked up on Friday 6 September and Saturday 7 September during the opening of our store. You can hand in on Monday afternoon 9 September and Tuesday 10 September, again during our opening times. You will then receive a € 100.00 return deposit. If your wetsuit is returned too late, your deposit will be canceled.

How old do I need to be in order to participate?

16 years old at a minimum.

Can I win something?

Yes, the individual participant with the highest sponsoring amount will get a nice price. For companies: the company with most teams and therefore the highest sponsoring amount will get a nice souvenir.

How can I apply for myself or my team?

This is only possible with www.swimtofightcancer.nl/maastricht

How many teams (companies and friend teams) of five swimmers can I nominate?

As much as you want. The more, the better! You can fill in a friend team with multiple persons for the normal registration free of € 75,- VAT included (Early Duck tariff until 1 July 2019 is € 35,-). Company teams pay € 1000,- VAT excluded. Each company team consists of a maximum of 5 persons.

Should this be employees of the same company or association?

No, this could also be other people. Friends, family, neighbors, club members; etc. This is determined by each company team themselves.

Can I participate with my own association?

This is of course possible. Each association can introduce one or more teams.

How much is the registration fee for company teams?

The registration fee for companies is € 1000,- VAT excluded for a maximum of 5 swimmers. On top of that, each team member should at least raise € 250,-. If the average of all team members is € 250,-, then this is of course sufficient as well.

May or should I raise € 250,-?

We want to raise as much money as possible for cancer research. That is why we determined an amount of € 250,- for you beforehand. It is possible to raise this amount at your own personal page. The proceeds per participant at other Swims in the whole country show that each participant raises approximately € 650,- on average, in which you will certainly succeed as well.

If I fail to raise € 250,-; am I not allowed to participate?

Participating is always allowed, even if you don’t raise € 250,-. However, don’t be afraid as a participants raises € 650,- on average. There are suggestions on the website, and shall you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to help you.

Do you have any suggestions for receiving donations?

Of course. On our website there is a long list of suggestions, like family dinners and car washing. s poetsen. Click (hier) for more suggestions.

Can I see the status of my own recruitment activities?

Yes, the top 10 of individual participants and teams can be seen on the website. The promotion page is accessible to everyone and everyone can share it in their network.

What will be provided by the association to each participant?

Each participant will get a swim cap with the logo of StfC and a unique number, a medal and flip flops. When financially allowed, this will be extended with for example a bathrobe, goodie bag or something else. The contents of the package depends on the possible sponsors.

Do I need to train beforehand?

Training for the swim is recommended. Swimming for 1 or 2 kilometers is something different than swimming in a swimming pool. The Swim is a recreative swim and it is not required to be an experienced swimmer. But practicing helps and will not do any harm. The chosen distance is challenging for unexperienced swimmers but is certainly doable.

Will training practices be organized?

If you want to train in outdoor water for the Swim, it is wise to contact the Grindgat Swimmers. They train together twice a week in the Grindgat in the Maas. Look at https://club.grindgat.nl for more information. The Geusseltbad also has beautiful training facilities where you can do your jobs undisturbed. Look at https://www.geusseltbad.nl for the possibilities or join one of the many swimming clubs.

How can I send a message to my family and all my friends to make it easy to donate to me?

Send an email, WhatsApp or Facebook message, or a Tweet with the link of your personal page (which is www.swimtofightcancer.nl/maastricht/firstnamelastname in most cases). In case people, beneath your photo and motivation press the ‘donate’ button, they will donate to you.

Donating, but paying at a later moment. Is that possible?

If you donate more than € 250,- as a company, it is possible to receive an invoice which should be paid within 14 days. In order to do this, go to the donation page and as soon as the amount is € 250,- or more and the company name has been filled in, the possibility (beneath iDeal) “Invoice” will be become available. Click this, and confirm you want to pay at a later moment.

Is it possible to apply/pay or donate with a mobile device?

Yes, there is a mobile website available, which can be used to apply and donate if a supporting mobile app of your bank is installed on your device.

I donated to the wrong person. What can I do?

Please verify that during donating the person to donate to is listed NEXT TO the form. If a wrong donation has been made, we are NOT able to solve this.

Is it also possible to pay from abroad?

No, this is not possible as the payment systems of our website do not support this. If you would like to donate from abroad, contact us and we will find a solution.

How do you separate the registration fee and donations?

The registration fee and donations are separated very strictly because we work with multiple bank accounts. There is one account for registration fees and possible sponsor money and another one for donations. With the registration fee and sponsors money we would like to cover organizational costs.

Donations will go for 100% to the foundation of Fight cancer, supporting charity directly. After the event, we will share the first proceeds. A few days after the Swim, the final total proceeds will be shared and be donated to the foundation that directly donates the proceeds to the selected charities.

Does StFC have an ANBI certificate?

Swim to Fight Cancer is part of Stichting Fight cancer. Fight cancer does have an ANBI status. Donations are therefore tax deductible under certain circumstances for companies, because they receive an invoice from us. Donations of private donators are also tax deductible under circumstances from their income tax.

Until what date is it possible to donate?

Until the day of the Swim, the 8th of September.

What are the possibilities for exposure for my company and what is part of the sponsor package?

For the first edition we keep it simple. Each sponsor or company team will be provided with a standard package of mentions, variating from name mentioning to attention on social media. Interested? Contact our sponsor commission: sponsoring@maastricht.swimtofightcancer.nl

 I transferred money, but it is not visible at the participant/team/volunteer. When will my donation be visible?

On the page of the participant/team/volunteer the amount will be visible when the payment has been received.

Don’t forget to mention the invoice number and own payment reference during the payment. Because of system processing, it can take a few days until the website has been updated with the payments.

What about the water quality of the Meuse and is it unhealthy?

The water of the Meuse river and adjacent recreation lakes, like the upstream Fun Valley, are being monitored full-time by Rijkswaterstaat. If there are concerns over the quality of the water, swimming will not be allowed. The European Environment Agency EEA has recently researched the Limburgian swimming water and considers it as excellent. Want to verify the quality at a regular basis? What will the association do when measurements show a negative result?

In case the water quality on the 8th of September is considered a risk to health (for example due to extreme weather), the association will take measurements in order to ensure the safety of all participants, with cancelling being a last consequence. See the general conditions for more details.

How is safety in and on the water guaranteed?

The satety and health of our Fighters is our most important concern. Therefore, there will be many safety precautions during the Swim. On the water there are experienced and certified aid workers available in order to support our swimmers from start to finish. There are plenty fire workers, lifeguards, first-aid workers, divers, swim supporters and security vessels available.

What is the temperature of the water of the Meuse in September?

About 23 degrees Celsius. Watch the website on the beginning of September for the actual water temperatures.

Is it dangerous to swim in the Meuse river?

The satety and health of our Fighters is our most important concern. Therefore, there will be many safety precautions during the Swim. On the water there are experienced and certified aid workers available in order to support our swimmers from start to finish. There are plenty fire workers, lifeguards, first-aid workers, divers, swim supporters and security vessels available.

And what about the water flow? Is it dangerous?

For this the association is in close contact to Rijkswaterstaat. In case the flow is considered too high by Rijkswaterstaat (which is not to be expected in September), this will be shared in time. It is possible that the event is being cancelled. Safety first! But this should not be expected.

How does the association watch the swimmers during the Swim?

At the start each participant will receive a blue or orange swim cap with a unique number and this is how we can watch all swimmers at start and finish. During the Swim there are boats of lifeguards and police at the swimming trail. There will be kayaks too, such that a lot of eyes can keep track of the participants.

Is a tetanus shot before the event obligated/recommended?

No, this is not obligated. But discuss with your doctor what is the best option for you.
